It happened again May 22.
With the predictability and reliability of Christmas or the Fourth of July, news coverage of America's Best Beaches list exploded on the eve of Memorial Day weekend. The product of the self-proclaimed Dr. Beach, Stephen Leatherman, the list celebrated beaches from Hawaii to Massachusetts.
Nothing wrong with that -- but as observers have said for years, it should be renamed "America's Best Saltwater Beaches" list. Dr. Beach has no room on his list, apparently, for freshwater beaches. But those of us who know and love the Great Lakes do. And it's time we developed and publicized the Great Lakes Best Beaches List.
Although ocean coast inhabitants may think of Great Lakes beaches as polluted, or usable only for a short time of the year, most Great Lakes beaches worthy of the name are gorgeous and available for year-round enjoyment. Much of the year, that may mean walking the beaches' edges, soaking up the beauty of the big sky and loud waves, but it's still enjoyable.
And from mid-June to just after Labor Day, full immersion -- and carefree, languid days -- are possible on most Great Lakes recreational beaches. There is simply nothing better in life than a Great Lakes summer beach day.
Dr. Beach's grading system involves 50 criteria with a sliding scale from 1 to 5. My proposed Great Lakes beach criteria are more subjective, and not comprehensive. My criteria largely embrace memories of satisfying, unhurried days of bright sun, clean sand, healthy water, the sound of joyful children, and the rhythm of waves.
I also haven't visited many of the most famous Great Lakes beaches. So I invite you to nominate your favorite Great Lakes beach to join my start-up list of 3. Please provide a picture if possible.
1. Ludington State Park, Michigan.
2. Warren Dunes State Park, Michigan.
3. Pinery Provincial Park, Ontario.

Lake Ontario has the best beaches!
So maybe I'm biased, but I think Lake Ontario has the best beaches on the Great Lakes, hands-down. Sandbanks Provincial Park is absolutely stunning (http://www.parkreports.com/gallery/gallery.php?park=Sandbanks). Main Duck Island is magical (http://www.photography-plus.com/image_pages/MainDuck.htm). Lake Ontario Waterkeeper publishes beach reports during the summer so you can see which beaches are the best for swimming (www.waterkeeper.ca/beaches). Community blogs like k7waterfront.org do a great job of tracking local beach conditions as well.
Add three more...
Our National Lakeshores are real treasures: Sleeping Bear Dunes http://www.sleepingbeardunes.com/ & Pictured Rocks http://www.nps.gov/piro/ . Also, downtown Traverse City, Michigan, where taxpayers have bought a continuous stretch of shoreline close to all the amenities of town & far from over-crowded!
People Need to Get Around
This isn't really much of a contest. Charlevoix, Mi Lake Michigan Beach, Charlevoix Township Beach or North Point can't be beat. Plus you can always go to one of the Lake Charlevoix Beaches all within walking distance of what is very well recognized as the best port on the Great Lakes http://bit.ly/137q6a
I'd really like to keep it a secret. . .
But it's at the DeTour State Park on M-134 in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Rustic camping just steps away from pristine, cold (until late July or August) Lake Huron - and no crowds!
Beaches
Oh Dave,
So many, so little time and space. Mosquito Beach at Pictured Rocks because of the intimacy, the view, the cool river running into the lake. Ah. (Actually, Chapel Beach, Hurricane River Beach, and 12 mile beach are also heavenly).
The beach at the end of the road in Empire at Sleeping Bear Dunes.
Nordhouse Dunes. Beyond splendid. Fine sand, big white pines, no crowds, great sunsets.
Kelley's Island
Kelley's Island is the quieter, more subdued neighbor to South Bass Island (Put-In Bay).
What most people don't know is that there is a gentle little sand shore tucked behind the jetty on the north shore. It's connected to the campground and real close to the Glacial Grooves. The ambience is easy and laid back. It's not empty but it is usually far from crowded.
The shallow Western Lake Erie waters make for more in-water enjoyment throughout the season.

Something for Everybody
1.) Pere Marquette Beach, Muskegon, MI - Pere Marquette Beach is one of only three nationally certified "clean beaches" on the Great Lakes.
This beach has everything you could imagine including a submarine!

2.) Oak Street Beach, Chicago, IL - Chicago's motto is Urbus en Horto (city in a garden) and I graciously thank the city planners everytime I visit.
This beach is temptingly close to the "Magnificent Mile", perfect for slipping away from your shopping companions and "jumping in the lake".

3.) Grand Haven State Park, MI - Great family beach, great town and numerous activities including the annual Coast Guard Festival.
